Hoping to make a good impression on his girlfriend’s parents, the man, Li Jiang (pseudonym), underwent gastric bypass surgery on 30 September, but tragically passed away just a couple of days later.

The surgery went ahead successfully on 2 October, and he was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) for post-operative care before being transferred to a general ward the next day.
Tragically, his condition suddenly worsened, he stopped breathing, and he passed away from respiratory failure on 5 October.

The hospital is willing to take full responsibility
According to medical records, Li had been experiencing gradual weight gain and snoring over the past year and was admitted to the hospital with metabolic syndrome, along with hypertension and a fatty liver.
His family questioned whether the hospital had properly checked his condition before the surgery and also raised concerns about how post-operative complications were handled and whether emergency treatment was given in time.

On 10 October, the local Health Commission was asked to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The final autopsy report will serve as the definitive reference for determining the cause of death, and the hospital said it will take full responsibility in line with the findings and relevant laws.
