Working in sales is never an easy job, especially when you remember that sales roles usually offer a low basic salary, and make up for it in sales commissions. As such, lots of salespeople tend to work extra hard at trying to hit their quotas every month.
The stress of finding customers and hitting their sales quotas can be pretty hard to cope with as a result, especially when they’re dependent on commissions to make a decent wage.
Unfortunately, this stress can contribute to the development of anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies in young people. This stress, if not remedied, can lead to serious consequences, as this story reported by China Press comes to show.
In a tragic incident, a man was reported to have committed suicide at his apartment in Cheras after facing severe financial pressure. He was only 32-years-old.
According to the report, it is said that the man, who was a native of Bentong, Pahang, had been stressed out over the financial issues that he has met. A friend of his who had tried to counsel him and offer him advice told China Press that the deceased had worked within the entertainment industry for many years before joining his current company as a credit card salesman.
The friend added that “His (the deceased’s) basic salary was only about RM1,000 and he has to pay his rent, cost of transport and other expenses. What he earned wasn’t enough.”
Apparently the deceased had also been struggling to hit his sales quota and as a result, didn’t earn much from his commissions.
The deceased was found wearing only a pair of red shorts by a security guard after he leaped from his apartment building and landed on the awning of a car park. He died on impact.
It is said that the deceased’s family had opposed the idea of him working as a credit card salesman due to the low pay and he had moved out of the family home as a result of their strained relationship. He had also wanted to be a tour guide and was taking a course with a travel agency prior to his untimely death.
Police who attended the case have ruled out homicide and are now pursuing the investigation under suicide. The body of the deceased has been sent to University Hospital for further autopsy.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, and hope that he may rest in peace.
