Fake identification has always been a problem everywhere but this case of several Malaysians driving without a proper driving license overseas certainly takes the cake.
Recently the Griffith Highway Patrol posted about how they managed to detect 3 fake international licenses in less than 24 hours on Facebook.
This actually took place in September but the authorities only posted about it at the end of December.
The first case was on the afternoon of 17 September when officers from Griffith Highway patrol stopped a white sedan car for a license check.
Driving the car was a 42-year-old Malaysian man who gave his ‘driving license’ and passport to the officer.
After looking at it, the officer made a check on the Malaysian Portal of Road Transport Department and found out that the man only had a motorcycle class license that was expired since 2005.
Further checks revealed that he does not have an Australian license and he has been staying in Australia for the past 6 years under a bridging visa.
The following day on 18 September, Griffith Highway Patrol set up a roadblock and stopped 2 cars driven by Malaysians.
The drivers were Malaysian men aged 32 and 22; both of them were asked to produce their licenses and when asked what the document was for, one said: “That’s my driver’s license. I need it for work.”
The other said: “My friend made this for me, so I can drive in Australia.”
A check was once again done on their ‘driving license’ and it showed that both of them have never actually held driving licenses in Malaysia and Australia.
The two men were also living in Australia for the past few years under a bridging visa.
All 3 of the drivers were issued a court attendance notice to attend Griffith Local Court on 7 December 2022 where they were convicted of the following offences:
- Possess false documents to influence the exercise of public duty, &
- Never licensed person Drive vehicle on road – first offence.
Their information was also passed on to the Department of Immigration to review their visas.
We hope that other Malaysians will not follow suit as this is dangerous and will definitely give a bad name to the country.
