A transgender woman was fined RM4,900 by the Syariah High Court in Terengganu today (July 23), allegedly for encouraging immoral behaviour on social media last year.

According to a report by Harian Metro, the sentence was handed down by Syariah High Court Senior Judge Kamalruazmi Ismail, after the accused, 20-year-old Mohamad Haikal Izzuwan Adun, who hails from Kelantan, pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court also ordered the accused to serve a 6-month jail sentence if she fails to pay the fine.

In his judgment, Kamalruazmi stressed that the accused’s offence had a major impact on society and brought shame to her home state, not to mention that it had gone viral and was linked to the recent raid on the alleged ‘gay sex party’ in Kelantan.

“We were made as men, we have to accept that and that we have death, heaven and hell. The court has given a lesson so that we do not repeat acts that give a bad perception to the state of Kelantan,” he said.

Where did this all start

Haikal was accused of inciting and encouraging sinful behaviour through social media applications in October 2024 while at a homestay in Kemaman, Terengganu. The authorities also found 13 case items.

The offence was charged under Section 42 of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2001, which carries a maximum fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of 3 years or both.

The court was informed that the accused was arrested by religious enforcement on Sunday (July 20) for failing to appear in court, and was brought to the Syariah High Court on Monday (July 21) before being released on bail of RM2,000 and one surety.

The accused was also charged at the Kemaman Syariah Lower Court under Section 33, for acting like a woman and was sentenced on Tuesday (July 22) with a fine of RM2,500 or 4 months in prison.
