A distressing video has been circulating on social media since yesterday, showing the aftermath of a fatal road accident in Alor Setar, Kedah caused by an underaged driver.
The video, recorded by the public, has been shared by many social media pages and news outlets, including by Berita RTM.
According to a statement by Kota Setar Acting Police Chief Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali, the incident took place at Jalan Kuala Kedah in the Kedah capital city on Sunday (22 October).
The accident was caused by a 14-year-old female driver who was driving a car belonging to her mother’s friend.
Driving during heavy rain, the underage driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a motorcycle.
The impact caused the death of 32-year-old Nur Syafiqah Abdullah at the scene, while her 43-year-old sister was injured.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has since issued a summon to the car owner for allowing an underage driver to operate the vehicle.
Furthermore, PDRM is also conducting an investigation into the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Under the provision, offenders may face a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000, as well as imprisonment between 5 and 10 years.
