12 people, including 3 children and a baby girl, were trapped in an elevator at a hotel in Kulim on Saturday (February 22).
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the Kulim Fire and Rescue Department (BBP) Chief, Assistant Fire Chief Hamizul Azwan Hamdan said his station received an emergency call in regards to this issue at around 9:26pm, adding that the other victims consisted of 2 adult men and 6 adult women.

“Upon arrival at the location, it was found that 12 victims were believed to be trapped in an elevator on the first floor of the hotel building,”
“The operation involved removing the victims through the ceiling and exiting through the elevator door on the second floor. However, all victims were successfully rescued and no victims were reported injured,” he added.
They were allegedly trapped for more than 2 hours
A woman inside the lift shared that she and the group were trapped inside the elevator for more than 2 hours.
Taking to her TikTok account, Intan Noratini claimed that the hotel staff delayed calling for help, leading to her baby girl “suffocating” in the enclosed space.
“We noticed her facial expression changed as if she was about to faint due to the lack of oxygen,”

“We were trapped from 9:10pm to 11:20pm, it was really panicky and hot inside the elevator, everyone was sweating. Then, we contacted the hotel maintenance team listed on the elevator and told them we wanted to call the fire department,”
“However, they said there was no need because the fire department had nothing to do with the elevator, which was strange. So, we just waited and after 30 minutes, they still hadn’t arrived. We pressed the emergency button many times and finally got a response telling us to wait,” she explained.
She added that the lights and ventilation system in the elevator malfunctioned several times, supposedly for repairs.

“We were sitting in the dark, there was no light or wind at all. So, we had to open the elevator door a little to let the wind in. However, Alhamdulillah, I am grateful because the children, especially the baby, were stable and all safe. I am just upset with the hotel management that has yet to apologise,”
“Hopefully, everyone will be more careful and the hotel will take the safety of guests more seriously from now on,” she said.
