Laptops do not come cheap, especially if you go for high end models that can easily cost thousands of ringgits. But its definitely not something that is worth losing a life over, especially since recently Malaysia was rocked by the death of a young cadet who lost his life reportedly over a laptop dispute.

21-year-old Malaysian National Defence University student Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain was tortured for days causing him to be rushed to the Serdang Hospital on Thursday with 80% of his body covered in bruises and burn marks.

According to The Star, he was allegedly tied up, beaten with a belt, rubber hose, hanger and burnt with an iron by his university mates for 2 days on May 20 and 21. But they did not deem his injuries to be serious enough until a week later on May 27 when two of his batch mates finally brought him to Bangi clinic for treatment.

However, the treatment was not sufficient and they brought him to the clinic again on May 31. The duo who brought Zulfarhan there did not go back to the university that night because they had actually snuck out of campus and stayed in an apartment in Serdang.

Things took a turn for the worse when they realise that the victim was deteriorating and had no choice but to bring him over to Serdang Hospital at around 8pm on Thursday.

It was too late then for poor Zulfarhan as he passed away two hours later in the hospital.

Following his untimely death, Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said that they are treating the case as a murder investigation and have arrested 36 students for a week. He also said, “It is still an ongoing investigation, please let us carry it out without everyone speculating.”

The Star reports that Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein views this case very seriously and has instructed that a probe take place immediately.

He said, “Very sad to hear the news about the death of a navy cadet officer, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, this morning, especially when we are focusing on fasting. I cannot imagine the family of the deceased receiving this sad news. I pray they are given strength and perseverance by Allah on their loss. I worked very hard to eradicate bullying in school. I have been consistent, no one will be spared legal action if found guilty.”

Zulfarhan’s remains will be sent back to his family’s residence in Johor Bahru and the Armed Forces will help to organise his burial at Tanah Perkuburan Kg Kurnia in Jalan Kebun Teh, Johor Bahru.

WOB would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain. May his soul rest in peace.
