Crab is considered a luxury food item in many places, including Malaysia. Hence is why it can be quite expensive to order at restaurants.
So, if you’re going to be spending good money on a crab dish, you’d expect a good amount of crab in it as well, right?
Netizen, 一位普通人, took to her XiaoHongShu account to share how she had ordered an RM78 crab fried rice dish at a Thai restaurant in Penang, only to find 2 tiny pieces of crab in it.
She wrote, “The most expensive and disappointing fried rice I’ve ever eaten in Malaysia.”
一位普通人 explained that she and her boyfriend had gone to eat at the restaurant after a friend had seen an advertisement and recommended it.
“I was really excited when they said that there was crab roe and crab meat peeled for you,” she shared.
When checking out the menu during her visit to the restaurant, the crab fried rice worth RM18 had caught her eye. But, due to some online reviews saying that the portion of crab in the dish was small, she felt skeptical to order it.
The restaurant also offered an upgrade of the crab fried rice, called Crab Komtar which costs RM78.
The waiter had then told her that the Crab Komtar was big in portion, enough for 2 to 3 people, which lead her to order it instead of the regular crab fried rice.
“I was already imagining the crab meat fried rice with crab roe poured all over it, but when the food was served to us, our first reaction was, ‘That’s it? OMG‘,” she explained.
Not only did the dish not appear to look like what was presented in the menu, but she only managed to find small pieces of crab meat in the fried rice, making it not worth the RM78 price tag.
“Where is my Crab Komtar? It looked like it had crab meat in every bite.”
While the dish still tasted good, she ultimately believes that it wasn’t worth RM78 as it was merely a doubled portion of the regular crab fried rice.
What would you do if you were in 一位普通人’s shoes? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
