A clouded leopard was seen roaming in front of a house in Taman Kota, Kampung Lahar at about 2am yesterday, 4 March, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
The species is scientifically known as a Neofelis diardi, or more commonly known as a clouded leopard. However, many locals refer to the particular animal as ‘Harimau Dahan‘.
The incident had many residents in the area worried about their safety and afraid to head out of their houses for work.
According to Harian Metro, the Village Development Committee (JPKK), Kampung Lahar Bahari Ismail said the footage of a leopard sniffing around for something just a few metres in front of a house was recorded by a resident and his wife.
“The video clearly shows the leopard roaming around. The leopard then entered the forest not far from the house,” he said.
According to Bahari, it seems that the leopard may be the same one he had seen last year, as it was similarly spotted at night and during the dry season that Malaysians are facing now.
He added on to say that maybe the leopard involved was hungry, which caused him to exit the forest to look for food.
The matter was then reported to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for action.
“Residents hope the leopard can be caught and relocated to another location,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Wildlife, Yusoff Shariff said that his party had received a report on the presence of the animal and has identified it as a leopard based on the video recording.
“Hulu Perak Wildlife staff have also set traps around the area to catch the leopard,” he said.
