The vendor of the viral ham & cheese sandwiches for KK Mart has broken the silence regarding its Halal status, and here’s what the vendor – Shake & Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd had to say.
The chicken slices used in the sandwich are certified Halal by JAKIM.
In a statement last night (January 15), Shake & Bake clarified the ingredients used for the viral sandwich, and said,
“The ingredients that we use for the sandwich are bread, chicken slices and cheese.”
Previously, it was reported that the officers from JAKIM and the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Cost of Living (KPDN) raided the premise that supplies the sandwiches to KK Mart. JAKIM also said that Shake & Bake’s Halal certificate had expired in October 2023.
The vendor, however, did not disclose if the Halal certificate had been renewed. However, the organization assured the public that it would cooperate fully with the authorities in this investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 5(1) of the Trade Description Act 2011 and Order 8(a) of the Trade Description Order (Certification & Marketing of Halal) 2011.
KPDN will also send samples of the sandwiches to a lab to determine the ingredients used to make the sandwiches.
On the other hand, Shake & Bake confirmed that the authorities visited their premises on January 10 at 12 p.m. The company, however, did not explain the Halal logo on the sandwich further.
The ambiguity of the Halal status of the sandwich has caused an uproar among Malaysian consumers, including the UMNO Youth Chief who has suggested that everyone download the Verify Halal application to determine the Halal status of every product they see in the market.
What do you think of the vendor’s explanation?
