Following the hullabaloo surrounding the sale of a ham and sandwich food product with a Halal logo recently, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) has taken swift action by raiding the premises in which the product was produced in Sunway Damansara, Petaling Jaya in Selangor.
The premises was raided by KPDN enforcement officers at around 1pm today due to suspicions that the company was misusing the Halal certification logo by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).
KPDN raids the premises producing the viral ham and sandwich food product
Harian Metro quoted KPDN director-general Datuk Azman Adam as saying that the raid was conducted by KPDN Putrajaya in collaboration with JAKIM.
He further elaborated,
“Based on initial information, the premises doesn’t have Halal certification from JAKIM, and the Halal logo used on the sandwich products is a Halal certification received by another company that is no longer operational and had sold the business to the company we raided,”
Azman added that the Halal certificate was confirmed by JAKIM to have expired on 15 October 2023.
Following the raid, KPDN seized various sandwich products, a computer, a printing machine and several business documents.
Accordingly, the case is being investigated under Section 5(1) of the Trade Description Act 2011 and Order 8(a) of the Trade Description Order (Certification & Marketing of Halal) 2011.
KPDN will send samples of the sandwiches to a lab to determine their ingredients
KPDN thus warns all parties to adhere to existing laws and regulations, as well as ensure that all products and services are according to the set Halal standards to avoid any legal action.
Azman stressed,
“Offences such as this are serious and can cause concerns among consumers, especially Muslims.”
He added that KPDN will also send samples of the sandwiches to a lab to determine the ingredients used in making the sandwiches.
