Ever since the Tabung Harapan Malaysia (THM) was announced yesterday (May 30), there have been mixed reactions from Malaysians about this. Some people said that they shouldn’t be responsible to pay off the national debt as they already contributed to taxes while others said that they were helping the government out because they love Malaysia. Just because you don’t donate doesn’t mean you should criticise others who do!
The government has also said that they established the official fund as they did not want crooks scamming other people by saying that they wanted to collect donations for Malaysia. Some people are such lowlives that they will think of all sorts of ways to scam others!
However, Leong Yu Man, the Triang MP shared a touching incident when an unknown man came into one of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Centres when she was on duty. The older man, whom she addressed as uncle, asked her, “Do you all have any fund-raisers to donate money to the government?”
Leong replied him, saying that the Ministry of Finance has announced that there is the official THM and told him that he could bank in his contribution there. To her surprise, he said, “I believe you. Please help me bank this in,” while taking out a thick angpau packet before passing it to her. Casually handing a big amount of cash to a stranger!
She tried to get him to give her his personal details so that she could notify him once she banked in the money but he refused to give any information. When she opened the angpau packet, she was even more touched when Leong found that he had given RM1,200 cash for THM.
In her post, she thanked the uncle profusely for his contribution and said that she truly appreciates his generosity to contribute RM1,200 to THM. The inspiring post has since been shared more than 11,000 times in less than 24 hours.
Netizens were impressed and touched by this heartwarming incident and praised the uncle for his generosity. A few others also said that they had followed in the uncle’s footsteps and donated to THM. One Malaysian summed it up by saying, “Ever since May 9, I can finally see for myself what it means when the whole country is united. Now I realise that actually, Malaysians are very patriotic and they love their country a lot.”
Although it may not seem like a huge amount to you but for the uncle, it may have taken him a long time to save up for it!
