Taking to Twitter, one netizen shared how Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) chose to not allow Sarees and Cheongsams as the clothing of choice for its convocation ceremony.
Writing, “UKM, is this true? Why are you, a university, practising supremacist policies? Please STOP!”
Netizens commenting on the tweet were divided, with some pointing out that one cannot go sleeveless or dress suggestively.
Instead, some suggested that a long sleeved saree, kurti or hanfu would do just fine.
Some were not so agreeable.
“Do they even know how revealing a Kebaya top can be? No jeans, t-shirt and shorts? Do they even know what climate our country is in? Tie and shirt to school? I went to my US college wearing shorts during summer lah dei!”
Others pointed out that the ensemble was merely for a convocation and not for usual attire used to attend classes.
Let’s hope that UKM will clarify the matter soon, via their official channels.
