Do you remember the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo that was highly criticised by many when it was first introduced back in January by then Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz? You know which one we mean!
After drawing so much flak from everyone, Nazri tried his best to defend the logo, which was reportedly done by “experienced in-house staff”. He described the logo saying that it should look fun and colourful, NST reported. He also said that the various symbols used in the logo such as the orang utan, proboscis monkey, turtle and Twin Towers were iconic to Malaysia. Yeah, even those sunglasses!
The logo was launched at the Asean Tourism Forum 2018 in Chiang Mai, Thailand and bears the tagline, “Travel. Enjoy. Respect.” Many netizens who saw the logo said that they could do much better and true to their word, there were quite a number of redesigned logos circulating on social media that looked way more professional suitable.
Well, if you are one of these people then you may be excited to know that the new Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry has announced that they will be redoing the controversial Visit Malaysia 2020 logo, according to The Star. To get a good replacement for the logo that has been criticised as “amateurish” by many, Tourism Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said that they are planning to hold a contest. Take note, creative minds!
“It will be an open contest this time. The idea is to get a proper design with Malaysians joining in to give their perspective,” he explained. While details are still scarce at the moment, he said that they will have a discussion at the ministerial level soon to determine the process.
However, it is unclear whether they will go for a complete redesign or just modify the existing one. Mohamaddin said, “Maybe we will use the existing logo but ask for it to be modified. Or there could be a new design. There is ample time to work on the logo.”
What do you think about this upcoming contest? Do you think our Malaysian talents can design a logo that’s more exciting and current?
