It was recently reported that Sabah and Sarawak are currently enduring severe flash floods, causing many to have to evacuate their homes.

And while Malaysians are participating in the Chinese New Year festivities, one Minister is receiving praise for spending his time assisting in the flood evacuations.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister and Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing took to his Facebook page to showcase his involvement in helping with the flood evacuations while sharing the hardships the people there are currently enduring.

He wrote, “After 3 days and 2 nights of relentless heavy rain, Bintulu has been severely inundated, with widespread flooding affecting numerous areas. In the worst-hit locations, water levels have risen to nearly the second floor of residential buildings. Many flood victims, particularly the elderly, women and children, have been left stranded in their homes, awaiting rescue.”

“At this critical juncture, I am immensely grateful to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for promptly activating its 24-hour emergency response mechanism. Through close coordination with the Resident’s Office, the relevant authorities—including the Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia Civil Defence Department, the military, and the police—have been swiftly mobilised to carry out rescue and relief efforts in affected areas.”

He also took the opportunity to share details about rescue operations, the possible causes of the flash floods and information on assistance hotlines, as well as flood relief centres.

Considering how he had spent his Chinese New Year drenched in the heavy rainfall and floodwaters, and in service of the people, netizens praised Tiong.
