Our fellow Malaysians are doing us proud this year!
National swimmer Welson Sim reigned supreme by leaving Olympic champion Mack Horton in the dust to take home a gold medal in the Victorian Open swimming championships in Melbourne, Australia.
He finished with a time of 3:54.77 for the men’s 400m freestyle, beating Horton by a second who clocked in at 3:55.43.
The Sarawak native’s big decision to leave for Australia last month for attachment at the Club Melbourne Vicente Swimming Club, where Horton also trains, paid off.
Now the 21-year-old has his eyes set on qualifying for the Olympics for the second time.
He said,
“That is my main goal, and I hope to do it at the world championships or the SEA Games in the Philippines end of this year,”
“It’s part of the training process at this time of the year, and I have not tapered.”
Other than the 400m freestyle, Welson also competed in the 100m freestyle final, taking home a silver medal.
He finished at 50:19, while 2015 world championships silver medallist Cameron McEvoy of Australia bagged the gold at 49.56.
All of here as World of Buzz wish Welson Sim the best of luck in his training and future championships!
