Yup, bet you didn’t know that there is actually a hidden bar in Penang, and it looks really awesome on the inside! Located just a stone’s throw away from 1st Avenue Mall, the speakeasy which was opened not long ago is known as Magazine 63 Bar.

When you reach the address stated, don’t be fooled by its shabby exterior and somewhat dodgy surroundings, because looking for this hidden gem’s secret entrance is part of the fun, okay! Warning: it can get a little tricky here!

The exact location of this new joint is the shop located next to Da Ma Cai, and you can spot it by looking for the classic lok lok cart that’s right outside the shop. It may look like it has already been closed down but just head to your far left and push the huge wooden door open.

Once inside, you will find yourself face-to-face with a brick wall and another dead end when you open the door but rest assured that you are in the right place. There will be a red sticker hanging next to you, which is the clue to the entrance, so just push another huge wooden door open and you’ll find yourself instantly transported to another era.

The interior of this trendy hidden bar is decorated in a vintage oriental style, which is usually thronged with working adults looking for a place to chill out after a long day. The bar gets busier after midnight, as the DJ spins their magic through the crowd.

Their drinks menu is pretty straightforward at the moment, with not many cocktails on the list yet, but be patient, because we predict that this trendy watering hole will be upgrading their drinks soon.

So if you head up north, do check out this cool place! Don’t say we bo jio!
