Given that Malaysians topped the list of foreign nationals visiting Thailand last year with a whopping 4,626,422 travellers visiting the Land of Smiles, then the sight of a Malaysian in Thailand enjoying the local delicacies there is not much of a surprise.
What about the opposite though? Well, that’s exactly what this video that has been circulating on social media in Malaysia is about.
Thai travel and food vlogger eating Nasi Kandar like a local
Going viral online, Thai travel and food vlogger ก้อยที่แปลว่ากิน or @gu_tt27 on TikTok caught the attention of Malaysian netizens for her review video of one of the most famous Nasi Kandar restaurants in Malaysia, Deens Maju Nasi Kandar in Penang.
Uploaded on 29 January, the video has since gone viral in our country after it was posted on other platforms by Malaysians, with a majority of users then visiting the original video on TikTok to post a comment.
At the start of the video, @gu_tt27 can be seen coming to Deens Maju Nasi Kandar at night and excitedly queue up to try out the iconic Penang dish.
Saying that Nasi Kandar is very delicious, @gu_tt27 said that Deens Maju Nasi Kandar is one of the most popular restaurants in Penang and shared with her Thai viewers how to queue up and order a plate of Nasi Kandar at the restaurant.
She then bought two plates, one for herself and the other for her friend, with different side dishes. One plate had rice, vegetables, chicken, boiled egg and mixed curry gravies while the other had rice, vegetables, chicken, squid and mixed curry gravies.
@gu_tt27 asserted that the Nasi Kandar they ordered looked super good and that the taste was 10 out of 10. Furthermore, she also praised how the chicken comes in large pieces and has amazing flavour.
The Thai travel and food vlogger then ate the Nasi Kandar with her hand, something not common in Thailand and assured viewers that she had washed her hands several times before doing so.
Besides that, she also praised the staff of Deens Maju Nasi Kandar as being very helpful and friendly, as well as praised the facilities available at the restaurant, including having a lot of tables and the ability to pay using a card instead of cash.
However, she does recommend viewers to come visit the restaurant at night as the queue could be quite long during the daytime, with almost a 1-hour queue guaranteed.

Malaysians flock to the comments section of the video
As with many videos of foreigners trying out our local food, Malaysians flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts on the food review by @gu_tt27, despite the language barrier.
One commenter found the irony of how an individual from Thailand had eaten at Deens Maju Nasi Kandar while he, a Malaysian, had yet to go there.
Meanwhile, one commenter asked @gu_tt27 whether the Nasi Kandar was good, to which she replied yes, it was good.
Besides that, one Malaysian commented that it’s hard to find a Thai that likes Nasi Kandar and one that also eats the dish with their hand like @gu_tt27. She then replied to the comment saying that she loved it.
Another Malaysian said that @gu_tt27 going to Penang and loving Nasi Kandar makes up for the many Malaysians that went to Hat Yai in Thailand.
Meanwhile, one commenter recommended @gu_tt27 to try out another popular Nasi Kandar joint in Relau.
