[TEST] Emojis: Important in Texting or a Danger to Language? We Asked 5 M’sians Their Honest Opinions

It’s impossible to deny how integral emojis are in our everyday lives, especially when we just celebrated World Emoji Day on 17 July. However, there are many conflicting views amongst Malaysians on the usefulness of emojis, not to mention that both sides of the argument make perfect sense – so pening kepala lah!

So, in the name of science, we took the time and effort to ask five Malaysians, each with wildly different views, their honest thoughts on the usage of emojis to settle the debate once and for all. Here’s what they had to say:

1. “Would emojis affect the human language?”

“Sometimes I worry whether emojis would affect our everyday chats or not, ‘cos we won’t need to use proper grammar and adjectives to say how we’re feeling. But maybe I’m just being old-fashioned. ?” – Syasya, 29

2. “Emojis allow us to REALLY express ourselves!”

“Emojis are useful in expressing our feelings when texting. Like, sometimes you type “Hahaha” but tak best lah, so you add emojis to show your emotions more. That way, they’d know exactly what you’re feeling!” – Haziq, 25

3. “Sometimes emojis can be confusing.”

“You know, my bapak got so confused the other day when my Gen Z sister replied him with the ‘?’ emoji – he was wondering why she was sad. I had to explain to him that kids these days use that emoji when they’re laughing hard at something.” – Nazirah, 33

4. “Using emojis can actually save time!”

“Just like using TBH, LOL and SMH, instead of taking the time to type out ‘Hahaha’ or ‘Thank you’, I can simply tap ‘?’ or ‘?’ in the emoji keyboard and my friends/family will get what I’m trying to say right away! It’s so easy.” – Ariff, 30

5. “I love how emojis make texting more personal.”

“I feel like texting in a prim and proper manner takes the fun out of it! Emojis literally (and figuratively) add colours into our conversations, almost accurately expressing our jokes and feelings that both my friends and family use them constantly!” – 29, Jerome

Emojis: Here to stay and spread the joy~

It’s true that maybe there is such a thing as using too many emojis when texting. This is why the best way to go about it is to balance between emojis and text to maintain our language proficiency while keeping texting (and life!) fun and humorous with our little yellow expressions (and eggplants). After all, we wouldn’t have painted the town yellow with World Emoji Day just for the heck of it!
