The “horror” has begun even before the release of the Pulau movie. The producer of the movie, Fred Chong has confirmed that Pulau has been banned from screening in Terengganu by the state government, but he will not stop there.
According to a report by Kosmo, Fred said that the appeal has been prepared and he is currently waiting for support from the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) before leaving for Terengganu on Monday (20 February) in an attempt to convince the state government to lift the ban.
While Fred acknowledged that Terengganu only has 3 cinemas, he said that he’s fearful of the possibility of the other states following suit.
“You might see only 3 cinemas, but I fear for the possibility of this happening in other states, which may happen in 30 to 60 locations.”
He added TGV cinemas in the state received letters from the Kemaman City Council who informed them NOT to release Pulau.
In a virtual interview shared by F8Buzz, Fred said that before the release of the movie, his team has already suffered a loss of RM500,000 after many sponsors withdrew themselves from promoting the movie following the negative reception of the trailer.
“My sponsors told me there have been too much negative noises, and with people calling Pulau softporn, we don’t want to be associated with it,” Fred said.
“Has anyone seen Pulau?”
In response to the accusation of the genre of Pulau, Fred has a question for the public – “Has anyone seen the film?”
He also said that the only people who have seen Pulau are FINAS, LPF, and Skim Wajib Tayang, who have all approved of the movie. He added that it’s unfair to make any comments about Pulau prior to the screening, and wants the public to know that his team has happily adhered to LPF’s suggestions about censoring 4 scenes from the movie.
Fred also took the time to share the message that Pulau intends to send to its audience.
“It’s about forgiving and forgetting the hate, so that you can move on.”
