Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah is suggesting that foreign vehicles that are caught illegally pumping RON95 petrol be blacklisted from entering Malaysia for two years.
He said this during yesterday’s Parliamentary session (21 January), citing a recent incident when a Singaporean man went as far as to use tape to alter his number plate to pose as a Sabahan driver while pumping RON95 petrol in Kulai, Johor.

“Even our RON97 is considered cheap”
He said, “Recently, there was a viral incident where a foreign vehicle, a Singaporean vehicle, had a ‘modified’ number plate; he had used duct tape to cover the ‘S’ in the front (of the number plate) as well as another alphabet at the back to pump RON95. The whole of Malaysia was angered, including myself.”
“There are people willing to do things like this for the sake of pumping our RON95 petrol. In truth, even our RON97 is considered cheap for vehicles from Singapore. The price of RON98 in Singapore is SGD2.88, or about RM9.08. Whereas, RON97 in Malaysia is RM3.08 per litre. This means that the difference is 3 times cheaper in Malaysia in regard to the better quality petrol.”

He pointed out that the law against foreigners pumping RON95 petrol is not discriminatory, as Malaysians with foreign-registered vehicles are also now allowed to pump RON95 petrol.
Follow the law
Jimmy Puah went on to highlight that stricter enforcement is required to ensure people follow and respect the law in our country.
Hence, he hopes that the government will consider amending the law to punish foreign vehicle owners who are caught pumping RON95 petrol in addition to blacklisting the vehicle from entering Malaysia for at least two years.
“The responsibility of complying to Malaysian laws should be shouldered by all parties.”
He added that the Malaysian authorities should include signages at Malaysian entry points that state that foreign vehicles are not allowed to pump RON95 petrol in Malaysia as a final warning as the vehicles enter the country.
