Just a month ago, two French tourists suffered a notorious scam locals know all to well – taxi drivers charging unbelievable amounts of money for their ride.

The two travelers who intended to visit the National Mosque from KLCC were charged a whopping RM800 for the ride. The estimated 6km ride turned out longer than expected as the taxi driver took them to a detour to Putrajaya before going all the way back towards the correct destination.

After the incident, the couple lodge their complaint to The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

Updates revealed that SPAD revoked the licence of the taxi operator and his vehicle permit for charging unreasonably high rates and scamming the poor two tourists.

In a statement by SPAD, it said,

“SPAD will take legal action against the operator. If found guilty, the operator could face a fine and/or jail term and the vehicle, forfeited.

“The individual involved will also be blacklisted to prevent him from getting a taxi operator’s licence in future.”

“The Section provides for only one valid driver registered with SPAD to offer the taxi service and is required to use the meter to determine the fare of the budget taxi, as well as producing a receipt for the journey,” it added.

Salute to SPAD for taking action so quickly. Especially when these thuggish taxi drivers are tarnishing the country’s reputation. It’s no wonder the government gave the green light to Uber and Grab to operate.
