For those of you living in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, you may want to keep this piece of news in mind.

According to Malaysia Gazette and Malay Mail, over 1.2 million people within both states may be affected by unscheduled water supply disruptions, after it has been found that water levels in the main reservoirs servicing these regions have dropped.

Four water treatment plants in Sungai Selangor were shut down last night by Air Selangor in order for cleaning works to commence after odour pollution was detected, but they have since been put back into operation. Despite that, water levels in the main reservoirs have dropped in these areas, which may lead to unscheduled water supply disruptions.

1,292 areas in eight regions are said to be directly affected by this water supply disruption:

  1. Kuala Lumpur
  2. Petaling
  3. Klang
  4. Shah Alam
  5. Kuala Selangor
  6. Hulu Selangor
  7. Gombak
  8. Kuala Langat

“Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) would like to inform that Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant (WTP), Phase 1 (SSP1), Phase 2 (SSP2) and Phase 3 (SSP3) had to be shutdown at 11pm last night (April 16, 2020).

“All four WTPs were shut down due to the detection of odour pollution at the raw water source in Sungai Selangor. As at 6am today, the odour readings were at 0 ton and all plants have resumed operations at 6.30am today.” read the statement from Air Selangor.

It has also been mentioned that water supply will be restored in phases to the affected areas, beginning from noon onwards. For the time being, consumers are advised to manage the usage of water carefully.
