The recent women’s beach volleyball match between Malaysia and China has been making waves on social media, sparking heated discussions online.
According to Kwong Wah, much of the controversy during the competition revolved around the clothing and body shapes of the Malaysian and Chinese female beach volleyball players.

“We accept both positive and negative feedback”
In response, Kuala Lumpur Volleyball Association President Dato Tony Looi broke his silence on the issue, urging the public to be more rational when watching sports and to show respect towards the athletes.
In a Facebook post, he acknowledged that public attention and opinions often come with sports events, but as long as the feedback is genuine and constructive for the growth of sports, they’re open to listening and accepting it.
“The Kuala Lumpur Volleyball Association welcomes all opinions and suggestions, whether positive or negative. As long as they’re sincere and constructive towards developing the sport, we’re happy to listen and take them on board,” he wrote.

“Stop bullying athletes”
However, Tony stressed that comments shouldn’t be about personal attacks, mocking appearances, or body shaming.
“All athletes, no matter their body shape, race, or clothing choice, represent their country or region on the international stage. Their hard work, team spirit, and professionalism deserve our basic respect,” he added.
He also urged everyone to “stop bullying athletes,” reminding that sports isn’t just about winning or losing, but a platform to spread positive vibes and inspire young people to chase their dreams without fear.
