Humanity comes in many forms and knows no colours.

This was showcased in a heroic act carried out by a 23-year-old Singaporean girl.

She took to the NUSWhispers to anonymously share how she had saved a man from committing suicide, and all it took was a hug.

Hug 1

She wrote, “I was taking the train home when I noticed an Indian man crying silently on the train. He was trying to hide it but it was clear to me. I took a seat next to him and asked him if he was okay. He did not respond. So, I stood up and hugged him close to my chest. Then, he started to cry more and more audibly. It was messy indeed, with tears and mucus. But, it did not bother me. I was more concerned that he may end his life or do something drastic.”

It turns out that the man was going through multiple problems and was on his way to ending his own life.

Hug 3

“I kept hugging him until the end of the journey. By this time, he was rather quiet. I looked at him and he seemed tired from crying. He managed to force a smile and thank me. He told me he was planning to end his life that day as he had a number of problems, from family to financials,” she added.

“He said he did not know nice people like me existed. He said he sees the world differently and he will now try to live and press on.”

Having saved a man’s life, she felt on top of the world. But, what came after diminished those happy feelings.

“Now, the problem is my family and friends. They made comments like ‘What if he molested you?‘ or things like ‘An Indian, you like black is it?‘. I felt sad after getting all those negative comments. I would have given a hug no matter who it was – old or young, ugly or handsome, ugly or pretty, male or female. Race is also not an issue for me,” she explained.

“I don’t think I did the wrong thing. I am not sure why people I told passed negative comments.”

It’s truly saddening that she had to go through so much negativity for saving someone’s life.

Humanity and helping others in need shouldn’t be segregated based on the colour of one’s skin.

To the girl who saved the man’s life, kudos and thank you for your bravery. Being the one person to step forward in a crowd can be difficult, but hold your head up high, because you certainly did the right thing.

What do you think about this? Let us know in the comment section.
