Monday (27 May) was a landmark day for SPM 2023 candidates as after doing their best in the O Level equivalent examinations, the results of the national examination were finally released

As we’ve shared previously, a total of 11,713 candidates impressively scored straight As in SPM 2023, though the result announcement was a bit marred by the revelation that a total of 10,160 out of 383,685 candidates were absent during the exam.

Now, more details about the SPM 2023 results have been published by the Examination Board, which include some interesting statistics about the top and worst performing subjects in the exams.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Malaysian economist and data scientist Thevesh created easy-to-read charts based on the SPM 2023 results to reveal the noteworthy statistics of the exams.

Firstly, Thevesh shared the list of subjects with the highest percentage of ‘A’ results (including A-, A and A+) in SPM 2023 which is as below:

As you can see, the subjects listed must have at least 10,000 candidates that sat for them to be included and according to Thevesh, many of the subjects at the higher end of the statistics are ‘specialist’ subjects for Islamic Studies.

Pendidikan Al-Quran dan Al-Sunnah is the subject with the highest percentage of A results in SPM 2023, with an impressive 51.6%, followed by Usul Al-Din with 40.5%.

Making up the top 5 are Prinsip Perakaunan (39.6%), Sains Komputer (34.0%) and Bahasa Arab (33.3%).

Additional Mathematics ‘defends its title’ as the subject with the highest percentage of failed results

Besides that, Thevesh also shared the list of subjects with the highest percentage of ‘Gagal‘ or failed results in SPM 2023 below:

The data scientist noted that both Matematik Tambahan and Matematik ‘defended’ their spot as the top 2 highest failed results percentage from SPM 2022.

Moreover, Bible Knowledge and Pendidikan Moral also remained the subjects with the 3rd and 4th highest failed results percentage.

In SPM 2023, the 5 subjects with the highest failed results percentage are:

  1. Matematik Tambahan (25.9%)
  2. Matematik (23.2%)
  3. Bible Knowledge (20.3%)
  4. Pendidikan Moral (19.4%)
  5. Manahij Al-‘Ulum Al-Islamiah (17.4%)
