It was just yesterday (August 23) when Najib’s sentence of 12 years in prison and a fine of RM210 million was upheld by the Federal Court. But rumours about the former Prime Minister receiving special treatment in Kajang prison have surfaced, which were also debunked.

Although the convicts’ meals have been made public, is Kajang Prison actually a place where special treatment is allowed? It appears that the prisoners themselves want to be moved to Sungai Buloh jail, where apparently the conditions are significantly better than at Kajang prison.

Clean water? It’s a miracle!

According to Sin Chew, the inmates in Kajang Prison revealed that the facilities in the place are relatively old. Not only that but the water supply is also barely clean, and the water they consumed every day is like a “special drink.” So it’s truly a miracle if they have access to clean water.

According to a lawyer, Sungai Buloh Prison is mostly for people who are yet to be convicted.

So, what is it like in Kajang Prison?

The lawyer revealed that the prison is divided into men’s and women’s sections. Up to three other inmates may share a cell with a regular prisoner.

A death row prisoner is typically kept in a solitary cell, where they are by themselves. Some convicts might need to be segregated for their own protection.

“For example, Najib is a former Prime Minister. The authorities may consider his safety so that he can have a cell of his own.”

If there is not enough room, two inmates on death row may be housed in the same cell.

The only “best thing” convicts can do while incarcerated is read. Books from family members are permitted, but they must first be inspected before being delivered to the inmates.

Can Najib go to Sungai Buloh Prison?

If the former Prime Minister wishes to be transferred to Sungai Buloh Prison, he can do so but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

First, he has to pen a letter to the Director of the Prison Department through an attorney and state his reasons for the transfer. And then, he has to wait for approval from the relevant parties.

One can only envision spending even a single day inside Kajang Prison. Do you believe Najib would submit a request to be moved to Sungai Buloh Prison?
