After all the controversy surrounding Nga Kor Ming’s Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s Christmas celebration that allegedly involved Muslim staff members, another DAP politician is also receiving flak for a Christmas-related post.
DAP Chairman, Lim Guan Eng, took to his X account to praise Liverpool football player, Mohamed Salah (affectionately known as Mo Salah), for celebrating Christmas. This comes after the Egyptian football player had received backlash online, over his Christmas celebration, from Malaysian fans.
Lim Guan Eng wrote, “An MU (Manchester United) fan salutes you, Mohamed Salah. Being an MU fan, I would not have posted news about Liverpool Football Club’s top scorer Mohamed Salah. But, I wish to commend Mohamed Salah’s courage, openness and respect for the Christmas celebration without jeopardising his own faith as a devout Muslim.”
“And, he is getting his family, especially teaching his two young daughters, to respect other faiths. You have made your fans proud by such a gracious gesture!”
Many netizens were unhappy with his statement
Many took offence to this as they believed Lim Guan Eng was provoking the Malaysian Muslim community with his statement.
“There’s no need to be a busybody in regards to the religion of others. This is already playing with 3R sentiments.”
“You should just sit quietly when it comes to things about Islam. People are condemning the player, not your political party or the government, so you shouldn’t add fuel to the fire. Aduh, this man. This is how you lose Malay voters.”
