Native to Southeast Asia, the king of fruits, durian actually has a lot of varieties across the region. In fact, there are many different varieties of durian in Malaysia alone, with the most famous and sought-after arguably being the Musang King.
Besides Malaysia, durian is also popular and a thriving export of our neighbour Thailand. However, have you ever wondered how Thai durian compares to Malaysia’s?
Well, Tara Choi, a South Korean content creator who’s living in Malaysia recently decided to give Thai durian a try while visiting Bangkok.
Taking to her TikTok account, Tara shared a video of the experience and compared the durian she purchased at a Bangkok market with Malaysia’s durian, which she had tried many times previously.
The 1-minute-2-second video has since gone viral, garnering over 708,800 views and 36,200 likes in just 2 days.
At the start of the video, Tara can be seen picking out a durian to purchase and ends up getting a “monthong” durian. She was then taken aback at the weird way the stall worker cut the durian.
Nevertheless, she ended up purchasing a packet and brought it back to her hotel room in Bangkok to try it out.
There, she observed how the durian has a weaker smell and is much drier than the ones found in Malaysia. She also claimed that many Malaysians told her that Thai durian is not tasty, hence why she wanted to try the latter for herself.
After getting one bite, Tara nodded her head and said that she now understood what the Malaysians were saying to her about Thai durian.
Tara then asserted,
“Not tasty. Thai durian is so lemah (weak). This is not right. The smell is inferior, the taste is inferior, the colour is inferior.”
“The size is bigger, but the taste isn’t there. Malaysia’s durian is tastier.”
