A tragic accident happened on November 19 near Kampung Petagas when a mother lost her life, and her 11-year-old son was seriously injured after being hit by a train at a railway crossing.

BERNAMA reported that the Putatan Fire and Rescue Chief Linda Eslaowagis shared that the boy was badly hurt and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The boy lost his right leg

The incident happened around 1.58 PM as they were crossing the tracks. The train, travelling from Beaufort to Kota Kinabalu, struck them, leaving the 41-year-old woman with fatal injuries.

The woman was pronounced dead on the spot, while the son unfortunately lost his right leg and sustained injuries to his hand and head.

Linda explained that the son was rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for further treatment.

“It was my mother”

BERNAMA also reported that the deceased, Lena Gabin, would regularly walk with her son between his school and their home in Kampung Muhibbah, Petagas.

Meanwhile, National Consumers Advisory Council Vice President Hashima Hasbullah Hashim, who happened to be at the location of the scene, only realised something had happened when she noticed the train had stopped.

“At first, I thought there were 2 kids involved, but when I asked the boy what had happened, he told me it was his mother,” she shared.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. May they find the strength and courage to navigate through this heartbreaking loss.
