Kids on basikal lajaks are considered a danger not just to themselves but also to other road users, as they often ride at high speeds on main roads and their modified bicycles do not have brakes.
Seeing that the public had complained about a group of kids on basikal lajaks in Penang, the Timur Laut police have decided to take action.
Taking to their Facebook page, the Timur Laut police shared how they ‘detained’ 7 boys conducting racing activities on their basikal lajaks, to be handed over to their parents.
They wrote, “Based on public complaints about a group of children allegedly racing bicycles in the Lebuh Relau 4 area in Penang, (which has led them to) disturb the peace and endanger other road users, the Sungai Nibong Police Station Task Force conducted a patrol and survey around the area on the evening of November 28, 2024 (Thursday).”
“Results of the survey found that 7 boys were racing on bicycles in Lebuh Relau 4, Penang. All the children were taken to the Sungai Nibong Police Station for documentation purposes before being handed over to their guardians.”
Parents urged to monitor their children more closely
They went on to urge parents to be more mindful and pay attention to what their kids are doing.
“The police advise parents to always monitor the movements, behaviour and activities of their children to ensure that they do not engage in any activities that endanger themselves or others,” they added.
