In an update, the Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhruddin Abdul Hamid has shared that the tenant had died from a heart attack.
According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, a post mortem examination revealed that a heart attack was the real cause of death.
It was initially reported that he had died from suspected starvation.
What would you do if you were a landlord and your tenant didn’t pay their rent for a couple of months?
One landlord in Petaling Jaya is now learning the hard way to check their property thoroughly before locking it up after believing that their tenant, who has not paid his rent in 3 months, had moved out.
According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the tenant was found dead inside the property as he, in reality, had not moved out and was still inside the house when it had been locked up. He is believed to have starved to death after a month of being locked inside.
The landlord shared that they had tried to contact the tenant by calling him 30 times prior to locking up their apartment unit, though the tenant had not picked up their phone calls.
The landlord then proceeded to lock the property thinking that the tenant had moved out and had not sent anyone to check the unit.
It was revealed that the tenant did not have enough money to top up his prepaid plan to call for help after he was locked inside.
The tenant’s family has since been in contact with a lawyer and is suing the landlord.
The landlord, on the other hand, said that they feel puzzled by the lawsuit as the tenant apparently had other opportunities to save himself, including using the balcony to shout for help from neighbours or the general public on the crowded ground floor.
