Lake Bumbunga is a salt lake located in Lochiel. The bubblegum-coloured shores are known to attract tourists and photographers from all over the world. The lake achieves its vibrant pink colour due to a pink bacteria (known as halobacteria) that thrives in high-salinity environments.
What you should know:
- The lake changes colour throughout the year ranging from pink, white or blue, depending on the salinity of the water. If you’re looking to see pink coloured waters, your best bet is to visit in the summer when salt levels are high.
- The lake has been a source of salt mining almost continuously since 1881. Even now, you can still find traces of salt mining along the shores.
- This lake is only an hour and 40 minutes away from Adelaide by car.

River Murray Dark Sky Reserve was built with an aim to provide a place where people can revel in the starry night sky that might not be found in most brightly-lit cities. It has become a popular spot for many to camp and enjoy nature’s source of light due to its low rainfall, clear dark sky and almost no pollution insight.
What you should know:
- This is the only Dark Sky Reserve in Australia and it is one of only 15 worldwide.
- The darkness of the sky is measured from a scale of 0 to 22 (complete darkness). The sky along the River Murray reserve was measured to be at 21.97, which makes it the perfect spot to observe the twinkling stars.
