An appalling incident in Bayan Lepas, Penang shook the nation recently after a woman was caught on video splashing hot water at a 33-year-old man with Down Syndrome inside the elevator of an apartment building, causing the victim to suffer burns on the front and back of his right side.
The woman has been detained by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) at 9.21pm on 19 April, with the case being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
The incident was caused by a ‘misunderstanding’
Barat Daya District Police Chief Supt Kamarul Rizal today gave an update regarding the case, revealing the findings of the ongoing investigation.
BERNAMA quoted Kamarul Rizal as saying that the suspect acted that way because of an ongoing ‘misunderstanding’ between the 2, though the exact nature of the misunderstanding was not revealed.
The Barat Daya District Police Chief asserted,
“Based on the investigation, the woman and the victim know each other because they live in the same building at the apartment complex.
“As of the investigation so far, the incident was due to a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim involving a sensitive issue that has took place since 3 to 4 years ago,”
Kamarul Rizal added that the suspect, who works as a sales assistant doesn’t have any mental issues. The police will also be sending the victim to undergo further examinations for his injuries.
He further revealed that the police had recorded the statements of 3 witnesses to assist with the case. Meanwhile, the victim is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition at the Penang Hospital (HPP).
