In a recent incident, a 17-year-old Malaysian student named Liu Le Yao (transliteration) lost his life while attempting to evade police.

Kampar District Police Chief Mohamad Nazri bin Daud said Liu and four of his friends were riding motorcycles with modified parts, which made them fearful of being fined by authorities. This fear led them to avoid police checks.

A helmet buckle was later found on the ground at the scene

Nazri explained that Liu held a provisional driving licence (P licence) and was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but it had not been properly fastened. According to police investigations, Liu and his friends encountered a police patrol while riding separately. Concerned about potential fines for their modified motorcycles, they fled.

Further inquiries revealed that one of Liu’s companions was riding without a licence and was also below the legal driving age. Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the case.

In another report by China Press, a witness claimed that Liu was wearing a helmet, but the protective gear was thrown onto the ground during the accident. A photo showing the helmet buckle on the ground also circulated on social media.

In his official statement, Nazri said Liu hit a bump on the road while fleeing from police officers, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle. He fell to the ground and sustained a severe head injury, which led to his death.

“The deceased and his friend encountered three patrol officers on motorcycles. The officers felt suspicious about the youths and turned back to check on them,” Nazri said.

The teenager fled after officers signalled for them to stop. Police officers who observed the situation followed the deceased from a distance, with an estimated gap of about 150 metres between them.

Nazri also reminded youths to adhere to all traffic rules. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death.
