The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has arrested local preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu for alleged seditious remarks he made regarding the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Sinar Harian, the preacher was arrested in Kangar, Perlis, earlier today because he allegedly insulted the Hindu religion and breached the public peace in a Facebook post.

The Malay publication quoted the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain as saying that the arrest was made following a report lodged by a 62-year-old individual at 6.30am yesterday (26 March).

Razarudin elaborated,

“The complainant alleged that they had read a comment on social media by an account named Zamri Vinoth regarding the results of negotiations on the relocation of the temple in Jalan Munshi Abdullah that is seditious in nature and insulting the Hindu religion,”

The IGP added that an investigation paper has been opened under Section 4(1) of the Seditious Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

MCMC will be taking action on Zamri Vinoth’s Facebook page

Moreover, the police seized a smartphone to assist in the investigation. Further action will also be taken against Zamri Vinoth’s Facebook account by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The 41-year-old preacher will be transported to the lockup of the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters and a remand order will be sought from the Kangar Magistrate Court tomorrow.
