One of Malaysians’ favourite travel destinations is definitely Thailand. Even if you haven’t been to Thailand, you would have surely heard of the Songkran festival, which is essentially the Buddhist New Year’s celebration for Thais.

Every year, Songkran falls on the 13th to 15th April and many travellers from all over the world fly to Thailand just to experience this unique water festival, which can last the whole week!

This is the best year to visit if you haven’t already because the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has declared that 2018 is dedicated to experiencing local Thai culture and hospitality with their new concept, “Open to the New Shades of Thailand”. Travel to Thailand mou?

That’s not all, of course! Here are some of the other reasons you should really check out this year’s Songkran festival!

1. For the biggest and wettest EDM festival in Asia, S20 Songkran Music Festival in Bangkok

If nothing else, you should definitely try experiencing S20 Songkran Music Festival, which often features big international acts on the stage. A three-day pass to this anticipated rave party is highly coveted as tickets sell out fast. It’s different from your other typical raves because in the spirit of Songkran, they have water hoses in front of the stage and water towers to keep you wet!

This year, early bird tickets will start selling from February 1st and although the line-up is not announced yet, in the past, famous names such as Afrojack, Dash Berlin, Yellow Claw, R3hab, Nicky Romero and many more have graced the stage. So, you can bet that it will be truly awesome!

Address: Show DC Oasis Arena/Rama 9, Bangkok

2. For one of the biggest and best partying experiences in your life

During this annual water festival, the Thais (and travellers) really know how to show you a good time with just a water gun! While they do this every year, expect a more lively celebration in 2018 as most Thais were in mourning last year. Many partying spots were encouraged to keep things subdued but the one-year mourning period has officially ended in October 2017.

Some of the places you should visit in Thailand to really get a good dose of fun are Khao San Road and Silom in Bangkok, the old city in Chiang Mai, Beach Road in Pattaya, as well as Bangla Road and Patong Beach in Phuket. All of these places will be accompanied by good food, drinks and awesome music!

3. For the craziest week-long water gun fight

Yes, the whole of Thailand is celebrating Songkran, and that may make it rather hard for you to decide which location you should go to. But fret not! If you want the full experience, then head over to Pattaya because the Songkran festival in Pattaya is known to be truly hardcore. The celebration in Pattaya goes on for up to a week, until April 19 and ends on Wan Lai, the ‘Flowing Day’. There are bars on almost every street, so you know that you won’t go thirsty even though you may be drenched in water!

PS: Remember not to shoot people in the face!

4. To participate in exciting foam parties

Here’s your chance to join in on some fun at the numerous foam parties that will be held all over Thailand. Choose a location in Thailand, book your tickets and flights, then take off in anticipation of your first-ever foam party if you have never been to one before.

You can enjoy a good foam party at Beach Road on Pattaya or at Hua Hin but we heard that the one in Central World Bangkok is one of the most happening events during Songkran. Every year, M2F hosts a fun-filled event for three days with several zones, which can be enjoyed by the whole family. The Foam Party Zone is one of most popular places in the event as partygoers can let their hair down and dance away to concerts by bands or tunes spun by popular DJs.
