How many of us grew up with the famous finger lickin’ good chicken which was a special treat back in those days?
It was practically a paradise for us kids and we still enjoy the juicy and tender chicken up to this day. Yes, of course we meant KFC!
Did you know that KFC Malaysia first started with the opening of their first restaurant on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1973? That makes it 44 years old this year!
That first iconic restaurant was the start of our love for fried chicken done the Colonel Sanders way and currently they have more than 600 KFC restaurants all over Malaysia so you know where to get that fried chicken you crave.
Back then, the menu was way different from the modern one we are accustomed to. For example, they only had Original Recipe fried chicken and something called “potato goldies” which we assume is similar to the potato wedges we know and love.
And one surprising discovery that was on the menu from the 1980s was that they served Carlsberg, Anchor and Guinness Stout in their drinks section! Who knew they cold beer with their fried chicken back then!
The prices of the beloved Snack Plate and Dinner Plate were much cheaper compared to the prices now, costing Malaysians only RM3.95 and RM4.95. But of course, the inflation wasn’t as high back then, so KFC meals were considered to be a treat, especially for kids.
We know that everyone calls it KFC now but this abbreviation only started in the 1990s.
Before that, Malaysians used to call it Kentucky instead. KFC also used to be a proper sit-down restaurant before the mid-1990s, where patrons were served by a friendly waiter or waitress instead of the current self-service concept that is popular with so many fast food restaurants.
All these talk about that finger lickin’ good chicken has got me hungry! Who’s up for some Snack Plates or perhaps a whole bucket to yourself? Don’t worry, we won’t tell! 😉
