18-year-old Muhammad Haikal, who is a differently-abled student at the Kepala Batas Community College, Penang, decided that his duty as a voter is so important that he would walk back to Kelantan to cast his vote if he has to.
And that’s exactly what he had started to do, until help came to the rescue.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the student had decided to walk home to Kelantan from Penang after bus tickets to his hometown had run out.
From there, he started walking while pulling his suitcase and eventually, he was found by one of his lecturers who was on his way home at about 7pm on Wednesday (November 16).
The director of the Kepala Batas Community College, Ts Jasni Mohd Yusof, shared that Muhammad Haikal, who had trouble with his movements and speech, looked tired when he stumbled the boy, but he was still determined to continue on his journey as it was his first experience in voting in the election.
Seeing this, he knew he had to do something
“To ensure the safety and welfare of the student, the Kepala Batas Community College took the initiative to send Muhammad Haikal back to Kelantan for the purpose of voting, using the department’s vehicle on Thursday (November 17),”
“Donations have been made by all Kepala Batas Community College staff to facilitate the student’s travel arrangements,” he said.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Haikal shared that he was moved by the college’s gesture, adding that the help given would ease the burden on his family as he is the eldest of 5 siblings and his father had passed away when he was only 11-years-old.
We’re so thankful for to the college for their kindness and assistance. And a huge kudos to Muhammad Haikal for his determination towards performing his civil duty this weekend!
