Nga Kor Ming has announced his resignation as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives with immediate effect.

Nga shared on Twitter that the decision was made to show full solidarity with Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Mohamad Yusof, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. He thanked the people who supported and assisted him during the tenure.

“I will sign the resignation letter and pass it to the Secretary of the House Of Representatives shortly,” said Nga in the press conference in Parliament on 13 July 2020, according to Bernama.

Nga Kor Ming is also a member of Parliament of Teluk Intan. The government’s motion to vacate the position of the Speaker for the House Of Representatives had been approved earlier with 111 approval votes and 109 vetoes.

According to Bernama, Nga said it was actually an honourable act as he had worked closely with Mohamad Ariff all these years when asked will the stepping down of his position following the motion threaten his credibility.

“This week marks two years Mohamad Ariff and I have served as Speaker and Deputy Speaker. That is why I am willing to resign as a mark of solidarity to the Speaker (Mohamad Ariff),” he added.

With the resignation of Nga, prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin nominated Datuk Seri Azalina Othman to replace Nga’s position.

Azalina Othman is confirmed to be the new Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
