Seafood is definitely among our favourite things to eat, mostly because of the sheer amount of ways you can cook and eat it. You can also bet that we’re always on the lookout for interesting new dishes, too!
One place that’s certainly intrigued us is this new joint in Kota Damansara, which serves up a huge variety of different seafood. ShellFish, which just opened its doors to customers earlier this month, offers a unique Szechuan-inspired roasted fish dish that’s loaded with an abundance of seafood and vegetables. So, when we got an invite to try out this dish for ourselves, you can bet on your life we said yes!
Brought to you by popular seafood chain, Shell Out, ShellFish’s Szechuan-inspired roasted fish, served steamboat-style, is something every seafood lover simply cannot miss! Why? Well for starters, you can customise your dish any way you like!
Customers can choose from five different types of fish [Threadfin (Senangin), Grouper (Kerapu), Barramundi (Siakap), Red Snapper (Ikan Merah) or Tilapia Red (Talapia)] and a wide variety of fresh seasonal seafood (i.e. scallops, clams, prawns, silky tofu, baby octopus, etc.) and vegetables, along with a side of rice.
On top of that, if you’re one who’s very particular about the way you like your seafood, you can also select the flavour of your soup base (sour or milky) and pick what level of spice you’d like (if your taste buds are up for a challenge, try out their Insane Chili Mix to amp up the spice even more!).
We got to try out the Siakap and Senangin, which were served in the sour and milky soups respectively. In terms of spice, we tried ours at comfortable Level 2, so if you’re a fan of spice, don’t be afraid to turn up the heat. Both fishes were cooked to perfection, flaking right off the bone (and yes, no overwhelming fishy taste!).
The dish itself is served in a hot pot, and for a little dramatic flair, the fish gets blow torched just before it’s ready to be eaten (that’s where the “roasted” element comes in!). Not gonna lie, this brought out our inner pyromaniac a little bit… it’s just so satisfying to watch! Just remember to keep a safe distance from the waiter as they’re doing this, though.
Although the fish is the star of the show, we definitely think its “supporting cast” (the mussels, scallops, silky tofu, seafood cheese tofu, and vegetables, just to name a few) are just as delicious!
If you’re worried about the fish getting overcooked in the hotpot, the heat can actually be remotely controlled and turned off.
As for the broths, they’re both packed with flavour and they really seep into everything, so the more you leave everything in, the more flavour gets soaked up. If you ask us to choose between the sour and milky flavours, we personally recommend the sour broth. It has a subtle tang that really complements the spices, plus it’s a little reminiscent of Tom Yam!
So, ready to clean the drool off your shirt and try this out for yourself? Here’s where you can find ShellFish! (Psst! It’s also halal, y’all!)
