A Malay woman has demonstrated how love for our fellow community members can be shown regardless of race or religion, after she chose to comfort an elderly Chinese woman whose husband had passed away.

Sofea Fia took to her Facebook page to explain how she had received a heartbreaking message from the elderly lady informing her of the bereavement.

She wrote:

“An acquaintance once asked me, ‘Can Malays attend the last rites of non-Malays?’ On the 23rd day of fasting, I received a message from a Chinese aunty: ‘My husband has passed away…’

“Upon receiving the news, I immediately went to visit her. She was very touched and happy by my presence.”

A shared humanity

Sofea went on to share how, in situations such as these, the divisions of race and religion should not apply.

“My intention was simply to visit and offer a little support, even though we come from different races and cultures. However, when faced with death, those differences seem to become insignificant. What is in front of us is simply a human being experiencing the grief of losing a loved one,” she said.

“At such a moment, presence, caring words, and sincerity mean more than any racial differences. This is the real Malaysia. Even though we are of different races, cultures, and religions, when someone is going through the most difficult time in their life, we still show up as fellow human beings.”

The essence of being Malaysian

She ended her post by pointing out that, in moments like these, the elderly woman should not be seen through the lens of being Malay, Chinese, or Indian, but rather as a human being who is grieving and in need of support.

“Because in the end, we are all Malaysians.”
