Need A New Budget Laptop? M’sians Share 6 Things To Watch Out For So You Don’t Waste Any Money

Usually, after three to four years of usage, most laptops tend to develop issues such as overheating, unresponsive buttons, flickering display and reduced battery capacity. How annoying is that?! The worst part is when we need to spend A LOT of time researching and selecting a new laptop.

Besides, most laptops cost thousands of Ringgit and we definitely want to get our money’s worth! So, we asked tech savvy Malaysians to share some money-saving tips when it comes to buying new laptops.

Let’s find out what they say!

1. Choose the right processor

Not everyone needs high-end processors for their laptops — it depends on what tasks the laptops perform! Intel®️ Core™️ i3 or AMD Ryzen™️ 3 are slower than the other high-end processors but they should suffice for simple tasks like web-browsing and social networking.

On the other hand, for professional use, it is wise to opt for Intel®️ Core™️ i5 and AMD Ryzen™️ 5. This is because high performance and processing speed are crucial in ensuring your productivity at work! ?

2. Operating system: Windows or ChromeOS?

ChromeOS supports every function that is related to the web, ranging from web browsing to using web-based applications. That said, if you’re using a laptop mainly for web-related functions, you most likely don’t have to spend money on a Windows license.

However, for functions beyond web browsing, it is better to opt for Windows as most software requires Windows to run. Such software include Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and PC games.

3. Pick a suitable display size

Laptops with smaller display sizes are usually lightweight and more portable. On the other hand, larger laptop displays promise high-quality user experience, especially when they’re used for work and visual entertainment. While there are also large screen laptops that are also lightweight, these laptops are usually pretty expensive! ?

This is when you need to decide between portability and usability based on your laptop usage. Unless you’re using your laptop for professional purposes at work, you can save some money by selecting a laptop with a smaller display for casual uses.

4. Don’t overspend on RAM capacity

Is it always better to have bigger RAM capacity? The answer is no! If you’re using your laptop for social networking, assignments and writing, a laptop with 8GB RAM should suffice — stop paying for that extra RAM capacity you don’t need!

Laptops with 16GB RAM are more suitable for multitaskers and professionals as they are less prone to slowing down when many applications are running at the same time. Besides, if you frequently use heavy-duty software, like photo and video editing applications, it would also be best to opt for 16GB RAM.

5. Determine the connectivity options you need

Laptops offer a wide range of connectivity options that serve different purposes, including:

  • USB ports: for peripherals like keyboard, mouse, flash drives and printer
  • HDMI ports: for connecting laptops to TVs and monitors
  • SD card readers: for reading SD card data such as camera photos and videos

Deciding on which input options you need based on your daily tasks can save you money. For instance, if you’re an avid photographer, you can purchase a laptop with a built-in SD card reader to avoid spending extra cash on an external card reader. ?

6. Know when to buy a new laptop

Buying a new laptop can be a big expense. The last thing we want is to spend thousands on a laptop, only to find out that it’s on sale a week later! Thus, it is best to keep an eye on sales and discounts.
