The rise in popularity of video games has unfortunately led to some less than positive results. It has undoubtedly had an effect on our younger generation who are more susceptible to getting hooked and addicted to such video games.

This addiction could lead to some very dangerous situations as a local restaurant worker in Melaka recently realised.

In a report by Harian Metro, it was said that a restaurant worker was severely assaulted by a group of men at a petrol station in Telok Mas, after he had tried to help his friend resolve a disagreement over an online game.

In the 5am incident, it was stated that his friend, Amirul, was persuaded by his friend, Mohd Arsyad, to the location to resolve an understanding over the latter’s refusal to participate in a Mobile Legends online game session.

Melaka Tengah district police chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police Christopher Patit, said based on the police report, the victims claimed that when they arrived at the petrol station, a group of men on motorcycles were waiting for them.

He said a few minutes later, more men on motorcycles appeared. The group then proceeded to assault Mohd Arsyad.

Fight

When Amirul attempted to step in and save his friend, he was also beaten up with motorcycle helmets.

Amirul sustained head injuries, a broken nose and also required stitches to the head when he was later taken to the Melaka Hospital for treatment.

“His friend, meanwhile, needed 10 stitches to the forehead,” he explained in a statement.

Patit said police, acting on information, deployed a team from the Secret Societies, Anti-Gambling and Vice Unit (D7) to conduct an investigation.

They have since arrested 7 people, aged between 16 and 28 in two raids along Jalan Kota Melaka, followed by 3 others at the same location 20 minutes later.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, and Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

All 7 have been remanded for 7 days from today to assist the investigation.

We hope that the boys recover speedily from the incident. Let this serve as a reminder that violence should never be an option.
