Regardless of what kind of neighbourhood you live in, we’re sure there are at least a couple of resident stray animals wandering the area. While most of us ignore them and think they can take care of themselves, we don’t realise that we’re actually contributing to a destructive cycle that can easily be stopped.
For instance, did you know that in just 7 years, a pair of unneutered stray cats can multiply to 420,000 strays? That’s a lot of cats in need of homes!
This was something Celcom intended on highlighting in their latest short film, which touched the hearts of thousands of Malaysian netizens. The video has already surpassed 4 million views, too!
Based on real-life events, “#ICAN Care” follows the story of Jean Liew, a young Malaysian woman who dedicates her life to rescuing strays. She patrols the streets in search of these helpless animals and takes them home. She cleans and feeds them, and makes sure they’re all neutered before finding them loving forever homes.
As you can imagine, this requires a lot of time and patience. Plus, it carries a steep price tag to boot. However, with the help of Celcom’s 4G coverage, Jean raises money by live streaming her workouts in exchange for donations from kind netizens, and she was finally able to reach her goal! :’)
We all know how hard saying goodbye is.
When Jean finally finds a forever home for one of her foster cats, we couldn’t help but get a little choked up when the kitty’s new owner takes it home.
It’s definitely a bittersweet moment every time she says goodbye to her strays, but she gets right back to work when another stray turns up in need of her help. Aww! There’s a little twist in the video, so make sure you watch it!
We definitely weren’t the only ones hit in the feels. Loads of Malaysians lauded Celcom for their efforts in raising awareness on animal welfare (plus, no one could resist those cute little animals, either!).
Indeed, many of us don’t really think of just how much neutering strays can help control the population. This of course will eventually lead to a better quality of life for these animals. Just because they’re not human, it doesn’t mean their lives are worth any less!
That’s why Celcom – in collaboration with Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM) Malaysia, an organisation dedicated to neutering stray cats and dogs to prevent unwanted newborn puppies and kittens – started the #ICAN campaign by creating this awesome video experience.
