When it comes to skincare, everyone strives to achieve healthy and seemingly flawless skin. This leads many Malaysians to try out various ‘viral’ skincare trends that are all over our social media. Nonetheless, skincare is a pretty tricky thing where not every product or method will work on everybody.
With that said, we’ve noted a few current skincare crazes that are favoured by Malaysians and asked the ultimate question: do they work? Here’s what we found out!
1. Double cleansing
Double cleansing stems from a famous Korean skincare routine (and we all know Koreans are good at their skincare!) where this method would require you to basically wash your face twice. But it also requires two different kinds of cleansers: first, an oil-based cleanser and second, a water-based cleanser.
This method is said to cleanse your skin more thoroughly, because the oil cleanser is effective in removing oil-based dirt such as makeup and sebum, while the water-based cleanser washes out water-based impurities like sweat or dirt. This method is also highly raved about because it cleanses your face without stripping off your natural oil and drying you out like those makeup wipes would!
VERDICT: It’s definitely effective BUT it does depend on your skin type and preference. Some people might be okay with double cleansing every day while others prefer to limit themselves to about twice a week.
2. The 60-second rule
The 60-second rule is another cleansing trend and as you can tell by the name, it’s pretty self-explanatory. This method was popularised by an esthetician from Los Angeles known as Nayamka Roberts-Smith from LABeautyologist, where she encourages people to wash their faces for 60 seconds non-stop. This is to let the ingredients in your facial cleanser properly penetrate your skin and cleanse it more thoroughly.
VERDICT: Though it sounds pretty simple, many people (including yours truly) find that this method can really work wonders! Of course, you definitely need to find a good cleanser that suits your skin and won’t irritate it. In this case, we’d recommend going with a gentle face wash, like Cetaphil, since it is known to gently cleanse and moisturise your skin so that your face won’t get dried out.
3. Chemical exfoliants
Over the years, Malaysians have gotten very advanced with their skincare and many have turned to learn the science behind it. If you’ve been seeing terms such as AHA, BHA, salicylic acid and so forth, that means you’ve found yourself on the more advanced side of the skincare world. Those terms are actually what we call chemical exfoliants and they are basically good acids that can help get rid of dead skin cells on your face.
ICYMI, face scrubs are so last season! Many people have ditched it due to the texture being way too abrasive, which can damage your skin’s overall health. Now, this is where these exfoliators come in! These acids help to chemically remove the dead outer layer of your skin to reveal healthier, regenerated skin.
VERDICT: These exfoliants are super helpful BUT it’s important to note that before you indulge in these ingredients, experts recommend having a healthy skin barrier first, meaning that you already have a solid basic skincare routine (that you NEVER skip) which suits your skin’s needs.
4. Derma roller
This trend stems from the procedure of micro-needling, which involves using tools with very small needles to prick the skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen and reveal youthful-looking skin. This procedure is commonly found at facial treatment centres and is done by professionals but nowadays, there’s a DIY version that involves this scary-looking device:
Introducing the derma roller. As you can see, this roller includes microneedles that are small enough to ‘safely’ prick your skin and allow skincare products to better penetrate your skin.
VERDICT: Out of all the trends in this list, this is one that we would NOT recommend to use at home. This method can be a bit risky, especially if you’ve never visited a professional and don’t know what is the true condition of your skin. It’d be much safer to let the experts take care of this one, okay?
Don’t take the risk just because it’s the cheaper option because trust us, it’ll be so much more expensive to fix damaged skin!
5. Face rollers
Face rollers refer to these nifty gadgets:
The function of it is pretty simple, you roll it on your skin which is supposed to give it tons of benefits, similar to how getting a massage is also beneficial to our body. Though it might seem a bit gimmicky at first, many people have claimed that these rollers work wonders to their skin as it improves the blood circulation on the face, decreases puffiness, and reduces wrinkles.
A popular myth with these rollers is that people think it can slim out your face but in reality, it can only help contour your face temporarily. If you’re thinking of getting one, we’d advise that you learn the right steps to use it which include:
- Using it with a face oil or moisturiser to avoid over tugging your skin, which can later lead to wrinkles.
- Roll it on your skin very gently and only in an upwards motion. NEVER roll downwards as this can contribute to wrinkles.
VERDICT: These rollers are perfectly safe to be used every day and if you use it correctly, you can definitely see some changes to your face. Plus, it can also be super therapeutic!
These skincare trends may seem interesting, but as we’ve mentioned before, skincare is not a one-size-fits-all type of deal. Just because a product has gone ‘viral’ doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Instead, focus on products that truly suit your skin’s needs. It’s also important to look at the ingredients of the products to ensure that it doesn’t contain anything harmful.
