Growing up in an Asian family would often mean that the oldest siblings would have the responsibility of taking care of their younger ones. They are usually taught to look after their younger siblings as it is their duty as the eldest of the family.
Just recently, a Facebook user, Azizul shared a story on his page regarding her concerns as the eldest sibling. In her post she said,
“I’m the eldest sister in the family and I have a lot of siblings. All of them are currently working except for my youngest sibling who is still studying in IPT.
I’ve realised that my siblings would always ask me to lend them money, especially my brothers. Sometimes, I’d have to cut down on my own expenses just so I can lend them money.”
She explained that she doesn’t mind loaning them some money but when she looks at their lifestyle, it doesn’t add up to their own salary. She mentioned that her brothers’ current wages are only given based on the days that they work. If they don’t work on a particular day, they don’t get any money, and this has caused their mom to worry.
“I tried looking for jobs for them but whenever I find something suitable for them, they would refuse as they mentioned that they don’t want to work under someone. I’m thankful with what I have, and I thank God that He gives me the opportunity to help my siblings out.”
“But when I see them not wanting to improve themselves, it doesn’t sit right with me. Fortunately, I’m still single but sometimes, I can’t help but think that God is delaying my jodoh as I need to help my siblings”, she added.
She then ended her post by saying that she feels lost as she doesn’t know if she should stop lending them money. She is afraid that if she stops helping, God will punish her by taking away her opportunities.
Following the post many netizens have commented and here’s what some of them said:
“If you love your siblings, you should teach them how to be independent.”
“You can be nice, but you shouldn’t suffer for the sake of trying to help them. Your siblings are taking advantage of you. You just need to help wherever you’re able to help.”
