Making Malaysia proud once again, national para-athlete Bonnie Bunyau emerged the champion for the men’s category during the Nur-Sultan 2019 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Kazakhstan.
The Malaysian strong man lifted 207kg for the category and quite honestly, we are in awe. A tweet by Team Malaysia explained just how significant Bonnie’s accomplishment was, saying,
“Two times champion! Previously, our Bonnie Bunyau lifted 190kg (for a powerlifting championship) and this time, he lifted 207kg for the Men’s Up to 65kg! What a legend. #ParaPowerlifting #NurSultan2019 #KamiTeamMalaysia.”
Prior to this, the amazing athlete became the champion for lifting 190kg in another competition!
Following that, in another tweet, Team Malaysia revealed that Bonnie Bunyan was made the new junior teenager world record holder after the 20-year-old lifted 207kg at Nur-Sultan 2019. Wow, just amazing!
His victory was made even more amazing as FMT reported that the powerlifter has secured a place in the Tokyo Paralympics next year (2020). Maybe Malaysia will get a gold medal from the Paralympics too, then!

Based on information from a paralympic website, Bonnie was up against two other contestants from Nigeria, Paul Kehinde, and China, Liu Lei, who are both formidable opponents. He was quoted as saying,
“I am very happy. I never expected to win the gold here with such strong competitors in my category. But I believe in myself, in my hard work and the discipline that I follow in my training. This is my biggest win ever.”
