A Sarawakian man who repeatedly raped his own daughter was sentenced to 74 years in prison and 48 strokes of cane. The 40-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting his 12-year-old daughter on 16 occasions between January 2016 and September 2017. However, the High Court dismissed an appeal filed by the man yesterday (16th October).

According to Borneo Post, the girl who lives with her family in a longhouse in Sarikei, sleeps with her parents and younger sister at night. One night in January 2016, she felt someone touching her body and woke up to her father touching her.

Her father then told her to take off her pants and raped her. She did not scream as she was afraid while her mother was unaware of what happened as she was sound asleep. After that, they both went back to sleep.

Since then, the father has raped the girl almost every night until December 2016.

In 2017, the girl went to boarding school and only returned home on weekends, during which she was found to have ovarian cysts and had one of her ovaries removed at the hospital, reported Oriental Daily.

One weekend in July 2017, the girl returned home and was raped by her father while she slept that night. He then raped her twice more in August.

On 5th September 2017, the father once again raped the girl, and the next morning, she complained to her mother about the pain in her wounds from the operation. However, she did not mention that he father had raped her.

When she went to school that same morning, the girl told her teacher about her abdominal pain. She also told the teacher that her father had raped her, after which the teacher immediately took her to Sarikei Hospital for a medical examination where doctors found old and new tears in the girl’s private parts.

Her father was then arrested on 6th September when he showed up at the hospital.

The man pleaded guilty on 4th July in the Sarikei Sessions Court to 16 charges under Section 376B(1) of the Penal Code and told the court that he needed to take care of his family, and that he was also remorseful over his actions.

However, Judge Lim Hock Leng in his decision said the court was not persuaded that the appeal should be allowed.

“Taking into account the respective submissions and oral submissions by both parties, this court is not persuaded that the appeal should be allowed. The appeal is dismissed,” said the judge.

Following his guilty plea on July 4th, the Sessions Court sentenced the man to 15 and 20 years’ jail on each charge, some of which are to run consecutively while others, concurrently.

It’s good that this man wasn’t given a more lenient sentence by the court as he deserves to be punished for his horrible crimes.
