Malaysians are currently baffled after stumbling upon vendors in the foyer of the library at a local university in Penang, that are apparently non-Halal but also Muslim-friendly.

A graduate research assistant of the university, Asmeelya Ishak, took to her Facebook page to showcase 2 vendors at the location, which had signs to display that they are non-Halal and also Muslim-friendly.

She wrote, “FYI, non-Halal is NOT Muslim friendly. Don’t put the signage side by side like this. Just put NOT FOR MUSLIMS. Easy.”

Shut down and cleaned up

Following this, an alumnus of the university, Din Shamsudin Hussin, highlighted that the university authorities have since shut down the non-Halal food stalls and have cleaned the space.

“The Security Department took swift action yesterday evening (April 21) to close the site immediately and cancel the program. Cleanup work has been carried out.”

“Organisers from the student associations (student council and the Tionghua Language Association) need to be more sensitive to Halal and Haram issues, and understand the University’s policies. Don’t act like a lamb or go overboard. Misusing the flexibility given for arbitrary freedom. All parties need to play their role in educating these ‘Gen Zs’ more effectively,” he said.
